Dr Hilary Byrne is the recipient of a Sydney Vital fellowship in the area of Nanotechnology and joins the Bill Walsh laboratory to carry out research into a new treatment for brain cancer.
Brain cancer is the leading cause of childhood cancer death and incidence of brain metastases approaches that of the most common cancers. Dr Byrne’s project will assess the potential of a new nanoparticle specifically designed to localise within brain tumours and give a synergistic boost to existing standard-of-care radiotherapy treatment. The behaviour of the nanoparticle in the body will be tested in a pre-clinical model, followed by a survival study to determine the increase in lifespan that can be gained. This project will lay the ground work for a human clinical study to demonstrate survival benefits for brain cancer patients.
