Sydney Vital is a Translational Cancer Research Centre based at the Royal North Shore Hospital and funded by the Cancer Institute NSW and the University of Sydney. Their aim is to take cancer research from the laboratory bench and put this into practice. By doing so, they are able to provide patients with access to the latest medical discoveries and improve both their care and outcomes. Their research partners include scientists and clinicians from The University of Sydney, Macquarie University & Medical School, The Kolling Institute, The University of Technology Sydney, Royal North Shore Hospital, Mater Hospital, and North Shore Private Hospital.

Besides funding outstanding cancer research, Sydney Vital also raises cancer research awareness to our local community via email, newsletters, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and their website. They also run regular ‘cancer events’ to disseminate cancer research findings and to engage with the local community.

Seed Funding
- Dr Kelly McKelvey – 2017 Sydney Vital Seed Funding – This project quantifies the tissue toxicity and immune-related adverse events of combined fractionated radiation and anti-PD-1 immunotherapy in brain, lung and colorectal tissue.
- A/Prof Viive Howell – 2016 Sydney Vital Seed Funding – for her project on the assessment of Tumour-Educated Platelets (TEPs) for monitoring therapy resistance and recurrence of brain tumours.
Scholar Awards
- Miss Angela Cho – 2018 Sydney Vital Research Scholar Award – for her research on investigating the potential of CA9 as a therapeutic target in gliomas treated with radiotherapy
- Dr David Chan – 2018 Sydney Vital Research Scholar Award – for his research on imaging in neuroendocrine tumours (NETS)
- Dr Malinda Itchins – 2018 Sydney Vital Research Scholar Award – for her research on investigating genetic mechanisms of resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy in ALK rearranged non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
- Dr Chris Nahm – 2018 Sydney Vital Scholar Award – for his research into developing an accurate diagnostic and prognostic blood test for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma
- Dr Malinda Itchins – 2017 Sydney Vital Research Scholar Award – for her research on investigating resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy in ALK rearranged non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) using proteomics.
- Dr Chris Nahm – 2017 Sydney Vital Scholar Award – for his research into proteomic biomarker discovery in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma using SWATH-MS
- Dr Adrian Lee – 2015 Sydney Vital Scholar Award – for his research into if molecular aberrations in the tumour predict for venous thrombotic episodes in patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM).
- Dr Yaser Gholami – 2015 Sydney Vital Scholar Award – which enabled travelling to Harvard University / Massachusetts General Hospital for collaboration.
Travel Awards
- Dr Sarah Hayes – 2018 Sydney Vital International Travel Award – which allowed her to attend the Human Proteome Organisation (HUPO) Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida to present her work on identifying mechanisms of resistance in rare lung cancer cell lines.
- Dr Kelly McKelvey – 2018 Sydney Vital International Travel Award (through Immuno-oncology Pillar) – which allowed her to attend the Association for Radiation Research Conference in Belfast.
- Dr Amanda Hudson – 2017 Sydney Vital International Travel Award –which allowed her to attend the Society for Neuro-Oncology (SNO) 22nd Annual Meeting and Education Day held in San Francisco in November 2017.
- Miss Angela Cho – 2017 Sydney Vital International Travel Award – which also allowed her to attend the Society for Neuro-Oncology (SNO) 22nd Annual Meeting and Education Day. Here, she presented her research into understanding why certain brain cancers recur and progress using advanced mass spectrometry.
- Dr Malinda Itchins – 2017 Sydney Vital International Travel Award – which allowed her to attend and present her research at the 18th World Conference on Lung Cancer of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC).
- Dr Chris Nahm – 2017 Sydney Vital Domestic Travel Award – To attend the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia 44th Annual Meeting and present his research on patterns of multiple immunohistochemical biomarker expression predict survival after resection in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.
- Dr Kelly McKelvey – 2017 Sydney Vital Domestic Travel Award – To attend the Co-operative Trials Group for Neuro-Oncology (COGNO) Annual Scientific Meeting in Melbourne on 23-24th October 2017
